Biography in Brief:


Gunnar Lucko, Ph.D., A.M.ASCE is Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at Catholic University of America (CUA) and Director of it Construction Engineering and Management Program, which is a specialization within the undergraduate and graduate studies in civil engineering. He has been a full-time faculty member since 2005.

He received his Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science degrees in civil engineering from the Vecellio Construction Engineering and Management Program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in 2003 and 1999, respectively. He also holds a civil engineering diploma (Dipl.-Ing.) with specializations in structural and environmental engineering from Hamburg University of Technology in his native Germany.

His research interest include the mathematical modeling, simulation, and analysis of project schedules and their relationship with other aspects, e.g. costs, construction equipment operations and economics, optimization methods, and engineering education. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed conference and journal papers on these topics. A particular focus is the novel use of so-called singularity functions, which originated in structural engineering, in project planning. His current research continues to expand the analytical capabilities of these flexible functions.

His research grant (CMMI-0927455) by the National Science Foundation investigates singularity functions in financial management, especially cash flows of construction projects. A previous research grant (CMMI-0654318) has created the productivity scheduling method, which has provided new derivations of criticality and different types of float within linear schedules. In other research he has statistically analyzed the owning and operating cost for construction equipment and examined the constructability of cast-in-place segmental bridges.

He is Specialty Editor for Project Planning and Design of the Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, is serving as Vice Chair of the Construction Research Council (CRC) within the Construction Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and is a member of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) and the Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Scheduling Community of Practice.

From 2006 to 2009 he was principal investigator for a funded collaborative project of the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (3090-05). Its unique student-centered team of undergraduate students, faculty, and industry assembled construction, structural, and earthquake engineering expertise to develop a low-cost sustainable foundation damper system for structures in developing regions. The team traveled to a community in rural El Salvador and successfully implemented the design in a health clinic building. He has also volunteered for CUA summer youth programs, e.g. Keys to Empowering Youth and Eye on Engineering. Since 2005 he biweekly mentors a group of local minority high schoolers through the national Career Directions for Students in Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) Program.
